General PvE Mesmer Skill Set
I ran my mesmer through Nightfall normal mode but I felt really inefficient and that my heroes were doing all the work. I don't really have a specific build I just ran general Mesmer things like Backfire, Empathy, ect. I am taking on EotN now and finding it increasing difficult. I have Sabway and some good Paragon heroes but I just don't know what I should be running to help out my teams. Do most mesmer's just run Ursan? How can I contribute? EotN feels like it is my Hero AI vs. Computer Monster AI with me watching. I know how to play a Mesmer, I just don't know what works PvE wise.

Many Mesmer run Cry of Pain with a cheap, fast recharging hex like Mind Wrack or Empathy. Skills like Echo, Arcane Echo, Mantra of Recovery, Assassin's Promise and or Air of Superiority are used to power up Cry eben more.
The Rest of the bar mostly contains skills for e-managment, like Power Drain, Auspicious Incantation or Glyph of Lesser Energy.

Personally I find that with large mobs like what you will see in Nightfall spells like backfire are inefficient. Running a e-surge cry of pain empathy power drain power spike style may make you feel like you are doing more. This is for Nightfall.
Gwen is better for the mesmer because mobs are tough and smaller letting you 1v1 which you should shine. Have you tried illusion line ?

My mesmer runs either the illusion hexer build with Cry of Agony or interupter (again with Cry of Agony).
As a mesmer, I don't concern myself with dealing massive damage (although I do enjoy watching numbers fly up from time to time )
I find it better to mitigate the damage done to my team and let them do the damage. That way, no dp and we get the treasure the monsters left behind. I have not gone Urasan, but I do go Mursaat/Djinn summoning. I'm still working on quests to get Pain Inverter.
If you want damage, Backfire works well, as does Pain Inverter.

Signet of illusions should be your friend :P
this opens up so much opportunities with other skills without investing points...you can play around with high-pve skills like asuran summons and such....versitility is key here

Agreed latey on my Mesmer I used Signet of Illusions to power mesmer PvE only skills, I use it to power an Asura Summon, and Either Nightmare (which turns into an AoE Conjure Nightmares at 16 Illusion), and Cry of Pain. I also use Acane Conundrum and now Clumsiness because they are AoE spells too.
On the Domination Line however I would go Echo E-Surger or Echo Cry of Frustration and play a Spiker, Chaos Storm works too.
You could of course go Me/E and Echo Nuke Meteor Shower, Fast Casting works to shorten cast times, and Glyph of Elemental Power can boost your damage.

Honestly, don't feel bad about your Heroes doing most of the "work".
Your job as a Mesmer, if you go Domination, is to shut down your opponent first. Shutdown means less damage to your team and healing for your opponent which means you should be able to cut through them pretty well.
I've been running with Cry of Frustraint, Power Surge, Power Drain, Leech Signet, Empathy, Energy Surge (E), and either Energy Tap or Either Feast, and a res. It gives me 2 skill shutdowns, 2 spell specific shutdowns, a melee damage spell, an area spell that also energy drains (and with a Domination of 15 does 96 to the area), and either another energy management if Leech and Drain aren't enough in Tap, or a self-heal in Feast. You could also replace it with Shatter Enchantment, Shatter Hex, or Shatter Delusions for some extra damage and either enchantment or hex removal.
Dom 12+2+1, Inspiration 7-9+1, and the rest in Fast Casting.
Now, you won't do a lot of direct damage, but you do enough to help knock someone down a bit (Particularly if you Power Surge, Cry of Frustration, then Energy Surge), and Empathy helps with attacking mobs to help wear them down. Meanwhile, you can stop your party from getting blasted so they can spend more time and effort killing things and less defending themselves/healing.

Doesn't a Paragon with shield still have more armour than a Mesmer with Artificiers?

If the mesmer uses a shield, I think it has the upperhand, but I can't remember.

7 signets are needed to make up the base difference... and that doesn't take into account insignia on the Paragon.
